in the Cabin
Classes are held in-person in Kernersville, North Carolina, between Winston-Salem and Greensboro. Most lessons are appropriate for beginner to intermediate watercolorists.
Introduction to Watercolors Series

Materials, Moths, and Butterflies
Let’s explore some of the enormous assortment of supplies that are marketed to watercolorists. Paper. Paints. Brushes. Samples will be provided for you to make some experimental paintings of fantastic or realistic moths and butterflies.
Class 1

Basic Techniques
We'll learn the basic techniques of watercolor painting. Wet on wet, wet on dry, washes, gradients, glazing, and other methods will be demonstrated and practiced. Then we will put together what we've learned into a simple composition.

Class 2

Colors and the Color Wheel
We will discover the essentials of colors, the color wheel, values, color harmony, and mixing to get the color you want. We’ll paint a color wheel with graduated values with your own colors so that you have a reference for mixing your own paints. Then we'll get an introduction to color charts and understand why they are so important to add to our tools.
Class 3

Value, Shading, and Shadow
Breathe life and substance into your painting with value, shading, shadow. What are they and how can we use them to create shape, depth, and capture the effects of light on objects? We learn where to place lighter and darker values as well as several methods to mix for them.
Class 4

Brushstrokes and Florals
We will learn a variety of brushstrokes as well as brush holding position and loading paint properly to achieve different effects. After practicing these skills, we will paint a floral composition.

Silly Goose
We will use wet-on-wet technique to paint a goose using a sketch that is provided for you to trace or copy, and then make some creative lettering in watercolor. Fun and relatively simple class!

Deer Friends
This class provides a great subject for a card or gift for anyone you love. And I didn’t misspell “deer.” We’ll paint a little bird bringing a heartfelt message to her friend. You will draw your composition based on a provided sketch. Can be painted as flat art or as a card.

Owl and Moon Hanging
We will paint owls and moons and stars for a charming hanger to put a bit of magic in a spot that needs your creative touch. You will draw your composition based on a provided sketch.

Ink Doodles and Watercolor
Fun class for any level. Drawing doodles with waterproof pen and then applying washes, splashes, and details will create a fun and fascinating piece. You will be provided with several pages of original Lisa Geiger doodles and samples of alphabets for inspiration.
Experienced Beginner and Intermediate Watercolors Classes

Abstract Ideas
Interpreting what we think and see with lines, colors, shapes, textures is satisfying and gives us fresh perspectives on how we paint. We will explore some concepts and techniques and see what happens!

Trees, Near and Far
Trees are in virtually every landscape, whether in the distance, mid-ground, or even as the primary subject. They are not easily painted without knowing some concepts and methods that you will learn in this class.

Mushrooms and Mixing a Harmonious Palette
One of the more important aspects of creating a pleasing painting is choosing a palette of harmonious colors. We will learn one fun technique for achieving this today. With this new skill, we will paint gorgeous fungi!

Landscapes and Simple Structures
We will learn elements of basic landscape painting, including basic sky washes, distant hills, simple structures, trees, and foreground.

Techniques for Painting Skies I
We will learn several techniques used in creating pleasing skies from blue skies, to clouds, and sunsets. We will discuss colors to use and do a lot of experimenting to develop skills with this more challenging subject.

Chickadees
If they aren’t at your feeder, they are flickering around your yard. These darting little bits of life make the cold December days more cheerful! Let’s capture some of these charmers with watercolors.

Winter Reflection in a Pond
Trees, the sky, and birds reflect their winter colors in a quiet pond. We will bring this lovely scene to life with watercolors. (Psst… this would be a perfect subject for a Christmas gift or card.)

Owl in Flight
This class will use some interesting methods. We'll paint an owl in flight through a night forest. The instructor will take you through several techniques to achieve a lovely painting. Some basic drawing skills will be used to plan our composition.
